If you’ve been firing off applications without getting interview callbacks, your CV is almost certainly holding you back. Before you waste more time applying for roles with a document that isn’t working, let’s find out exactly what’s going wrong.
I offer a completely Free CV Review to give you honest, constructive feedback based on over 40 years of commercial business experience, senior management, recruitment, and professional CV writing. Having recruited and interviewed hundreds of candidates across my career, I don’t look at your document like a proofreader—I look at it like a hiring manager looking to make a business decision.
This isn’t an automated report or a generic checklist. Every CV sent to me is reviewed personally by me. If your CV is in good shape, I’ll tell you. If it isn’t, I’ll explain why and show you how to fix it.
Why Have a Professional CV Review?
The modern job market is ruthless. Recruiters often receive hundreds of applications for a single vacancy and spend less than 6 seconds deciding whether a CV deserves further attention.
To make matters worse, Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS) automatically screen out around 75% of applicants before a human eye ever sees them. If your document fails on formatting, structure, or positioning, you are being rejected without ever knowing why.
A professional Free CV Review helps identify the exact roadblocks standing between you and an interview:
-
Weak Professional Profiles: Summaries that sound like generic fluff rather than an impactful value proposition.
-
Duty-Focused Writing: Listing day-to-day responsibilities rather than commercial achievements and measurable results.
-
ATS Compatibility Flaws: Poor structure, awkward table formatting, or missing section headers that hurt your ATS section structure score and overall readability.
-
Missing Strategic Keywords: Failing to include natural, industry-specific terms so your application satisfies criteria for targeted roles.
-
Lack of Career Progression: Failing to show clear leadership, project delivery, or commercial growth.
The Reality: Many professionals tell me they’ve applied for dozens of jobs without a single interview. In 9 out of 10 cases, the problem isn’t their experience—it’s how that experience is presented. When you tailor your resume to match the specific job description, you dramatically improve its effectiveness and increase your chances of being shortlisted.
What I Look For: ATS Compatibility & Human Impact
Every Free CV Review is tailored specifically to you, your industry, and the roles you are aiming for. Instead of a basic proofread, I assess your CV like a senior hiring manager checking for commercial impact, structure, and real-world results across two distinct levels: Machine Pass-Through and Human Engagement.
During your review, I personally assess:
-
Overall Visual Layout: Clean, executive-level formatting that ATS systems parse without error.
-
Core Summary & Positioning: Does your introduction immediately hook a decision-maker?
-
Quantifiable Achievements: Evidence of leadership, cost savings, revenue generation, and project impact.
-
Keyword Integration: Natural use of industry terminology to ensure high ATS compatibility.
-
Job Alignment: Comparing your CV against target job descriptions to ensure you present as the ideal candidate.
I provide clear, practical feedback and section-by-section fixes so you know exactly what to improve first. While basic AI tools can help rewrite CV lines, human judgement from an experienced recruiter is what keeps your narrative accurate, credible, and compelling. These strategic improvements ensure your CV stands out from other candidates.
Honest Advice From Someone Who Has Recruited
The main advantage of receiving a Free CV Review from me is that I have spent decades sitting on the other side of the interview table. I don’t just write CVs—I understand what causes employers to accept or reject candidates instantly.
In my experience, candidates almost always undersell themselves. During my consultations, we regularly uncover major projects, leadership responsibilities, and commercial value that were completely left off their original document. Fixing weak wording and uncovering those hidden details is often the exact difference between being ignored and securing an interview invitation.
Who Can Benefit from a Free CV Review?
Whether you are applying for your first professional role or competing for a board-level executive position, an objective review offers tremendous clarity. I regularly work with:
-
Experienced Industry Professionals & Senior Executives
-
Project Managers, Engineers, and IT Specialists
-
NHS Staff, Healthcare Professionals, and Teachers
-
Graduates and Career-Changers
-
Military Personnel & Police Officers Transitioning to Commercial Roles
Every career path is unique. Instead of relying on generic reports, impersonal AI features, or automated scoring tools, my process is built on real human guidance. You receive personal support and quality feedback designed to strengthen your CV for a much more effective job search.
If you are considering investing in a Professional CV Writing Service, a Free CV Review is the ideal place to start. It gives you complete clarity on where your document stands before you commit to spending a penny.
Specialist Support for Every Career Transition
If your review highlights that a complete rewrite is necessary, I offer specialized services tailored to your exact career pathway:
-
Executive CV Writing Service: Built for senior leaders to highlight strategic governance, P&L management, and commercial impact.
-
Ex-Military CV Writing Service: Designed to translate military rank, jargon, and operational achievements into language civilian recruiters value.
-

-
Cover Letter Writing Service & LinkedIn Profile Optimisation: Ensuring your written application and online personal brand present a seamless, consistent narrative across all channels.
My Approach: No Sales Tactics, Just Honest Guidance
Unlike many commercial CV writing companies whose “free review” offers are simply automated sales funnels designed to force an upsell, my approach starts with a genuine conversation.
I take the time to understand your career journey and aspirations before offering recommendations. If your document only needs a few minor tweaks, I’ll give you the advice to go fix it yourself. If we decide to work together, you can read more about my consultative CV Writing Process, but you will never face a pushy sales pitch or be handed off to a junior writer.
My goal isn’t to criticize your work—it’s to show you how employers see you and provide clear guidance to help you achieve interview success.
Questions Candidates Often Ask (Q&A)
Q: Is this really 100% free with no obligation?
A: Yes, absolutely. I will review your CV personally and email you honest, practical feedback outlining where it succeeds and where it needs work. There is no hard sell, no automated subscription, and zero obligation to hire me afterward.
Q: Why shouldn’t I just use a free automated AI scanner online?
A: Automated scanners check for basic keywords and generic formatting, but they cannot read context. They don’t know if your achievements demonstrate true commercial value, nor do they understand candidate positioning for executive, military transition, or specialized roles. An AI checks text; a recruiter with 40 years of hiring experience evaluates you.
Q: How long does the review take?
A: Because every CV is reviewed personally by me rather than run through a machine, I typically return detailed feedback within 24 to 48 hours.
Q: Will my personal data and employment history remain confidential?
A: Completely. Your CV is never shared with third parties, stored in public databases, or used for automated marketing. Your privacy and data security are strictly protected.
Stop Guessing. Find Out Why Your CV Isn’t Getting You Interviews.
If you are tired of submitting applications into a black hole and getting silence in return, it’s time for a strategy change.
Instead of guessing what hiring managers want, let an experienced recruiter tell you exactly how to win them over.

Translating military command into Civilian Board Language
Quick Summary
Ditch the Where, When, and Who. Focus on the HOW.
Deployments, operational theatres, specific dates, and unit names mean nothing to a civilian board. On a military executive CV, they are dead weight.
Civilian recruiters don’t care where you were deployed, when you were there, or who you were with. They care about HOW you operate:
HOW you managed multi-million-pound capital budgets.
HOW you mitigated enterprise risk under high pressure.
HOW you led organisational change and strategic capability.
Strip away the operational background noise. The moment you focus purely on the HOW, translating your service into a powerful CV, Cover Letter, and LinkedIn profile becomes ten times easier.
The Officer’s Transition Dilemma: Unmatched Experience, Misunderstood Talent
Being a veteran myself, I know how hard it is to translate your military responsibilities and KPIs (Key Performance Indicators—civvy speak) into powerful statements that both recruiters and HR managers understand and want to act on.
In my mind, an executive CV must achieve two things:
It must make the reader want to meet you. It has piqued their interest because it uses the words and phrases that match the types of roles you are applying for (choosing the right recruiter is another blog I will write).
Your CV must provide “scope.” By that, I mean using figures, financials, and numerical responsibilities. More importantly, it must correlate directly to you. If you were the Captain of a destroyer, it may well be: “Total accountability for a £3B warship with 198 crew,” not “Royal Navy warship with large crew.” Or: “Accountable for a £4M logistics budget across 8 locations in the UK with 465 personnel.” It must describe the accountability without going into deep operational descriptions.
Every bullet point in a CV must earn its place. The way to measure it—and I use this with all my clients—is that for every bullet point, you must be able to talk about it extensively in an interview, whether that is a technical description or a real-world example.
Ditch the Service Record: Why Military Appraisals Fail in Corporate Recruitment
Okay, let’s say you have been in the military for 22 years. How on earth do you describe timelines? You can’t put down every location you have been to, and you can’t structure it by what you did operational-wise or who you served with. So how do you write it—and, even harder, keep it to a maximum of two pages?
The answer is by rank: what your accountabilities and KPIs were within that specific rank or timeframe. That way, it’s no different from climbing the corporate ladder. It’s just the environment that changes.
As your career progresses, you have more responsibilities. You may start off with a platoon of 20 soldiers, and after 18 years have the responsibilities of a Colonel of a regiment on your 6th promotion, building a clear timeline from there. As with any corporate role, your scope and responsibilities increased over time.
This is where a professional CV writer comes in. Finding one with direct experience in the military—and one who has signed the Official Secrets Act—is not easy to find. Yet, here I am.
The Language of the Boardroom: Translating Operational Command into Commercial Terms
Here is where so many people come unstuck. You are likely so used to using acronyms that it is second nature, and the people around you totally understand what you are saying. However, in civvy street, you may as well be talking in a foreign language.
Having someone who has served in the military gives you a partner who understands the context—even across different arms or branches—and can transfer that meaning over so commercial headhunters not only understand it, but are impressed by it.
Not long ago, I wrote a CV for an Engineering Officer serving on submarines—a highly secretive world. Once again, it came down to not what they did or who they did it with; it all came down to the how.
On paper, they were a “Watchkeeper on the nuclear reactor.” The corporate translation I used was Nuclear Operations Manager. That term immediately communicated to executive recruiters just how senior the person actually was.
Strategic Vision vs. Tactical Execution: Pitching at the Right Level
Civilian board members don’t care how the engine room ran or how the daily routine was maintained—they take high performance for granted. They care about why it mattered to the organisation’s overall objective.
At the executive level, you aren’t the person carrying out the plan; you are the person setting the direction, securing the budget, and managing the risk framework.
Focus on words like: Future-proofing, Capability Development, Governance, Organisational Design, Risk Appetite, and Capital Allocation.
Avoid words like: Supervised, Carried out, Conducted, Administered, or Managed day-to-day.
In the military, reacting to an emergency is tactical. On an executive CV, it should be framed as business continuity and risk mitigation:
Tactical: “Led the response to a critical equipment failure during an underwater deployment.”
Strategic: “Designed and operationalised high-stakes contingency frameworks to safeguard critical infrastructure and protect operational continuity under extreme pressure.”
Q1: Can’t I just use ChatGPT or an online tool to rewrite my military CV for free?
A: You can try, but it’ll cost you interviews. AI tools love buzzwords and corporate fluff, but they don’t understand context. An AI doesn’t know the operational weight of managing a submarine reactor or running logistics across eight defense sites under extreme pressure. It’ll give you a generic, polished “civvy” draft that sounds like every other applicant. Headhunters and corporate boards spot AI-generated CVs a mile off. What they want is genuine scope, clear accountability, and real-world leadership—things only a human who understands both worlds can extract.
Q2: Should I list every unit, deployment, and command position I’ve held over my career?
A: Absolutely not. That’s a service record, not an executive CV. Corporate recruiters don’t care where you were deployed in 2008 or who you were with; they care about how you operate at a strategic level today. Keep it to a maximum of two pages. Focus on your progression by rank, your financial accountabilities, team sizes, and the high-stakes decisions you made. Every single bullet point on that page must earn its place—if it doesn’t demonstrate commercial value or executive scope, cut it.
Q3: How do I handle non-disclosure agreements, classified projects, or the Official Secrets Act on a CV?
A: By focusing on the how and the scale, never the classified operational details. You don’t need to name specific locations, mission objectives, or sensitive assets to prove your senior leadership. Having signed the Official Secrets Act myself, I know how to frame your performance around enterprise risk management, multi-million-pound budget control, capability development, and stakeholder management. You show them the commercial weight of what you managed without ever stepping over the security line.
Q4: I’ve never held a commercial “P&L” (Profit & Loss) responsibility. Will civilian boards hold that against me?
A: Only if you fail to translate your budget management properly. In the military, you might not have been turning a profit, but you were managing multi-million-pound capital assets, public expenditure, complex supply chains, and strict budgetary constraints where failure wasn’t an option. That is capital allocation and risk governance in its purest form. When you frame your financial accountability in terms of asset optimization, risk mitigation, and resource efficiency, civilian boards instantly get it.
Q5: Why shouldn’t I just hire a standard executive CV writer from civvy street?
A: Because you’ll waste half your consultation explaining military hierarchy and basic terminology to them. A standard civilian CV writer will struggle to separate your tactical duties from your strategic value, and they often default to turning senior officers into middle-management project managers. Working with someone who has walked in your boots and understands the weight of command means zero translation loss. We get straight to extracting your true commercial value and positioning you where you belong: at the board level.
Why Work With Me?
Navigating this transition alone is tough, but you don’t have to translate your career in isolation. As a veteran who has walked in your boots and signed the Official Secrets Act, I bridge the gap between military command and corporate boardrooms. I know how to strip away operational jargon, extract your commercial scope, and position your leadership at the executive level where it belongs. Every bullet point we craft together will earn its place, reflect your true accountability, and force headhunters to take notice.
Ready to Secure Your Next Command?
Don’t let two decades of high-level leadership get lost in military terminology. If you are ready for a sharp, commercially focused CV that speaks the language of corporate boards, let’s talk.
Book Your Executive CV Consultation Today and let’s turn your service into your greatest commercial asset.
